Course Brief

The Operating Regulations for High Voltage Systems (ORHVS) safety training will equip trainees with theoretical and practical safety knowledge to enable them operate the national electrical network safely

Theory classroom training will be conducted at the Ogssl Uganda Head Offices with further hands on practical safe operating trainings conducted at field sites across the country.

Description of the Training:

The objective of ORHVS training is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to perform High & Low Voltage switching operations on utility or industry assets in a safe manner to protect staff and equipment. The course is designed to ensure safe isolation and access to high voltage equipment.

Participants will be exposed to the following:

  • Safety rules and operating procedures for HT switching
  • Knowledge on safety requirements and legislation
  • An understanding of the hazards associated with switching high voltage equipment
  • The dangers to employees and equipment
  • An overview and understanding of SANS 724 Arc Flash PPE, types and HRC levels of PPE and the consequences of failing to wear the appropriate clothing.
  •   Knowledge on the correct procedures for switching, isolating, testing and earthing of HV electrical power systems.
  • Knowledge of the necessity for proper testing and measuring equipment
  • How to gain entry into live substations and enclosures
  • Knowledge and insight into basic and non-unit and unit protection
  • Switching exercises
  • Taught how to write switching programs to ensure that HV equipment can be safely isolated and earthed for access to work on the equipment.
  • Real life instances through multimedia and in case studies to illustrate proper switching requirements
  • To provide participants with the knowledge and safety information necessary to understand electricity and the dangers associated with it to operate the network safely.
  •  To provide Theoretical knowledge to all trainees through Classroom trainings, Power point, Flipcharts and Videos.
